SCHOOL AFFAIRS
PRIMARY AND HIGH SCHOOLS MONTHLY MEETING Mr W. R. Garrard presided at the monthly meeting of the Cambridge 'Schools’ Commitee held in the Primary School last Monday evening. Others present were: Mrs K. L. Wilkinson, Messrs T. Cummings, P. Andrew, C. Wallace, W. Moore, M. J. Clark (secretary). The headmaster, Mr T. Kane, w T as also present. It was decided at the February meeting that the chairman and Mr Andrew shoifld investigate the various ’bus routes and report to the March meeting. A letter was received from a Maungatautari resident regarding transport of three pupils from a point three miles further on than the ’bus normally went. As a result of the investigations made, Mr Andrew reported that this particular matter was out of the committee’s hands, as the ’bus taking this route was controlled from the Leamington school. It was decided to advise the writer of the letter, that much as the committee would like to facilitate the travelling of the pupils concerned, it could unfortunately do nothing as they had no jurisdiction over the ’bus. Mr Khne reported having conferred with the school committees at Karapiro regarding a possible ’bus service to convey the children into Cambridge. It was hoped that the Department would see its way clear to provide this extra ’bus. Headmaster’s Report. Mr Kane reported that there were 450 pupils on the Primary School roll and 136 on the High School roll. He had been in touch with Messrs Moore and Hardy regarding the 'effecting of inside repairs to the Primary School and it was hoped that these would be done very shortly. A letter was received from the Auckland Education Board regarding Dr. Entwistle’s resignation and appointment to a teaching position in another district. Further letters from the Board were as follows: A subsidy of £lO (£5 to each school) was being made to the school libraries, a list of the books to be purchased, to be submitted to the Board’s Inspector for approval. Regarding land belonging to the Agriculture Department. —The Board would consult with the Department and advise the committee accordingly. In reply to a letter from the committee requesting the Board to make certain alterations to the plan for building the-live 1 extra rooms at the High School, the Board wrote stating'that the' architect had approved the alterations. The request for another seven typewriters had been referred to the Manual and Technical department, who had advised the committee that at pt esent they could not suply the school with the extra machines, but it was hoped to have some released from the Services which would be available to schools requiring them. In reply to a letter from the Waikato Primary Schools’ Swimming Association regarding funds foi running a swimming carnival, it was decided to donate the sum of one guinea to the fund. Mr Kane pointed out. that adult help, would be needed on Friday, which was the day that the schools were in charge of the Red Cro»s shop. Mrs Wilkinson was authorised, to organise help for the day. It was decided after a survey of existing insurance policies, to bring them all into line and payable at the same time. Also that the inspector review them and modernise the various covers. Tenders For New Rooms. It was left to Mr Garrard to write to Mr Goosman, M.P., if, within a short time, tenders had not been called for the building of the additional new class rooms promised. A telegram had been received from Mr Goosman saying that the tenders would be called last week. Tribute To Secretary. Mr Garrard paid a fine tribute to the untiring efforts of the secretary, Mr M. J. Clark, who was not only an efficient secretary, but took such a keen interest in the affairs of the committee and of , the schools. It was decided to increase, for this year, the honorarium by another £5 SS Mr Clark said that he had an additional interest in its affairs, as he had members of his own famil> attending the schools, and happy at all times to give what assistance he could.
