INTENSIVE CULTIVATION NEEDED MATAMAT A ’ S EXAMPLE Urging that every Mataihata back . garden should become a miniature vegetable farm, a well-known Auckland horticulturist and seedsman who recently visited that town, remarked that gardeners should act promptly. His advice might well be taken to heart in Cambridge* Domestic gardens should be built up to offset the shortage of vegetables for civilians’ use, with commercial crops meeting the forces’ . growing demands. Vegetables that can and should be sown now are broad beans, onions, spinach, silver beet, cabbage, and cauliflower. At a recent conference at Matamata first steps were taken to inagu'rate the gardening scheme which is to be carried on during the present year by a section of the auxil- f iary. Nearly two acres in the domain have been ploughed for the purpose, and this will shortly be cleared of the fescue roots and made ready for planting, in the spring.
