GORSE WEAVIL
NOXIOUS WEED PARASITE RAGWORT FLY EXPERIMENTS Advice has been received from the Assistant Director and Chief Entomologist of the Cawthron Institute that the gorse weavil is doing useful work in keeping the weed under control, and that the distribution of the parasite for this year has been nearly completed. The weavil, which attacks the gorse seed, has now been released in most districts in New Zealand. Work on the ragwort fly is still in the experimental stage and as yet no definite conclusion has been reached. However, further experiments in connection with the fly are being carried out on Crown lands in the Rotorua district, where operations will not be disturbed. The work of this parasite is showing good progress and indications point that it will form an important factor in checking the seeding of ragwort. The ragwort fly only destroys the seed and not the plant itself, so that it can only be ancillary to other methods of destruction.
