LAND SETTLEMENT

MR BROADFOOT'S QUERIES A constructive speech, dealing with land settlement problems and land development, was given by Mr W. J. Broadfoot (Waitomo), in the House recently. He emphasised the point that inducements must be held out to men and their wives and families, if they show aptitude and willingness to be granted titles to land on which they are working development schemes. He pointed out the inherent weakness of the Governments policy by which titles were not granted. He asked: "Why is the major development being done by single men in camps, for instance? Why are not more married men with families employed, and why are they not housed on their potential sections? There is a great reservoir for farm land development in this country." "About how many brands of tobacco do you reckon there are, all told?" enquired a Dunedin man oi> his smoke merchant. "Couldn't say," replied the latter, "but my encyclopaedia says about 500."
