WINTER SEASON CONCLUDES ijl "' :i DAYLIGHT NEXT WEEK j Summertime, with its extra halfhour of daylight, will come into operation on Sunday. In many ways it will mark the change-over from winter to summer sports, particularly as the weather is so warm and dry. Many clubs have held their annual meetings, and it will not be long before the tennis courts, cricket fields, croquet lawns and bowling greens are in use. Cambridge differs from some towns in that bowling and golf are played by many members all the year round. Rugby closed early this season. The play in club competitions was affected as a result of the large number of members who enlisted for military service, but the season was as good as could have been expected. By next year, the Karapiro hydro-electric scheme will be employing over 400 men, a percentage of whom should be good footballers. The golf season is still in progress, the closing day being set down for November 2. It is not decided yet whether the annual opentournament will be held on Labour Day. ; At the present time the championships are being decided on the Cambridge ■'-• links. The Bardowie Club's season has been brought to a close as a result of the racecourse being used as a military camp, i The hunting season concluded earlier this month with the point-to-pofht races at Fencourt. The annual rade meeting has still to be held on Labour Day. ) Cricketers held their annual meeting this week; and are hopeful for a successful season in spite of haying fewer "members. The Leamingtomorrow night to discuss prospects for the season. The Cambridge Ladies' Club, which was; formed last year, has not yet decided on a programme for this season.
The Taotaoroa Tennis Club has opened its season, and within the next few weeks more clubs will be getting under way. The Leamington Club is holding its annual meeting tonight, and the Cambridge Club will meet tomorrow evening. Angling is very popular in Cambridge, and local fishermen are preparing their gear in readiness for the opening of the season on October 1. If the Waikato River provides the same sport as last year, most anglers. will be satisfied, and will not worry about going too far afield. „
