THE MATAMATA MEETING •la* ONE CAMBRIDGE WINNER » The Cambridge trainer, Mr W. Townsend, maintained his successjful run at Matamata on Saturday, when he gained a first with Pocket Venus and a second with Radiant Vaals. There were several other Cambridge horses at the meeting, a second being registered by Or were in the main sprint event. The favourite, Merry Vaals, had every chance in the opening event, but had to lower his colours to Lady Clorane, who came from a long way back to win convincingly. The third horse, Lord Ace, paid nearly two score on the place machine. Te Haka, Kingcraft, Runanga and Acreman were the next to finish. After standing the field a good good start over the first mile, General Ruse showed superior class to win the Tirau Hurdles by two lengths from Charcot with Haile Boy six lengths further back third. The Cambridge trained Hopalong hit a fence hard and was pulled up after five furlongs. Orwere endeavoured to lead from end to end in the Waharoa Handicap, but was beaten by a heck by Little Artist, who was more suited by the easing conditions. Besiege finished fast into third place, ahead of Tosh and Brazen Bold. A good double-figure dividend was returned by Town Section in the Railway Hack Handicap. She was ridden by the succeseful apprentice V. Dye, who scored on her at Cambridge last Labour Day, when she paid over half a century. Sir Lysander, who showed his' usual brilliance was second and Kaspiau third. Sir Robin was slow away and finished well for fourth. Culp to Erlick ; Gaining a clear lead four furlongs from home, Erlisk stayed on well to win the IMatamata Cup by two and a half lengths from the favourite, Jack Tar, who beat King Rey by half a head for third. Farland led for six furlongs but finished with only the other Cambridge horse, Bonstar behind him. In the first division of the Putaruru Stakes Gold Money Song won by a neck from' Paymaster, with a likely improver in Agricola, third. Silveyor, trained by L. D. Rice at Te Rapa, may have won the second division had he not run very wide at the home turn. Radiant Vaals then took the lead, but was beateninto second place by Fairfield. Five lengths away came Valsome, With Silveyor fourth. The public sorted out Greek Queen, Kilcash and Racecamp to fill the placings in the Okoroire Hack Handicap. This proved the case, but in reverse order, Racecamp winning by a nose to give V. Dye his third win.
After being handily placed throughout, Pocket Venus won the concluding event by three-quarters of a length from Erlick, who was having his second start of the day. Gold Vaafs finished strongly in third place, after receiving a check at the straight entrance.
