Improvements to Square.—-Work is progressing in connection -with the improvements to the entrance to Victoria Square, which when completed will be more in keeping with other parts of the town area. A new ticket box is being constructed to the left of the main gate.

Exhibition Buildings.—lt is expected that within a month the contractors will have completed the main building of the exhibition in Wellington," The contract for the British Pavilion has been let to Fletcher, Love and Company,. for more than £30,000, and a start has been made.

Local Man in Court. Joseph Kelly was charged in the Cambridge Court on Thursday with behaving in a disorderly manner. The Magistrate, Mr W. H. Freeman, agreed that the charge be withdrawn when Kelly made application for, a prohibition order, to be taken out against him.

Abolition of Mountain Tolli—The first step in a concerted move for the abolition of road and park tolls from the Egmont National Park was taken this week when, after a deputation from the New Plymouth Twenty Thousand Club had waited on the Park Board, the board appointed a sub-committee to confer with the club on the question of a schem ?.

Bus Services.—Buses Limited, of Hamilton, applied to the No. 1 Licensing Authority, ■-'■■Mr E.J. Phelan, at the sitting in Hamilton on Thursday for renewals .of their licenses which include the service from Cambridge to Hamilton. The Authority reserved his decision, but assured the applicants that there would be no difficulty in meeting their requirements.

Whitebait in April.—April is rather an unusual month in which to catch whitebait in New Zealand, but campers in the Lake Hawea district recently enjoyed meals of this delicacy which did not come out of tins. Whitebait were running fairly well in the Hunter River and satisfactory hauls were obtained; It is said that these whitebait are not sea-run like the common variety, but breed on the shale at the river's edge and on the beaches of the lake; •"..:: ":;
