SWIMMING TALENT
CAMBRIDGE OPEN CARNIVAL NAWI KIRA AND THE NATIVE SPEEDSTERS Nawi Kira, and Bennie Morrison, Maori swimming prodigies, will doubtless gain several hundred Cambridge admirers on Saturday evening when, fresh from Dominion and Auckland championships, they will compete in the first open carnival organised by the Cambridge Amateur Swimming Club, this season. Accompanying these two young champions will be a team of eighteen native speedsters from the Rotorua and Ohinemutu Clubs. Nawi Kira is the New Zealand junior champion who exhibits advanced technique and dash, and she is the greatest swimmer of her age yet developed in New Zealand. She has covered 100yds in 66 1-5 secs., and has swum within striking distance of New Zealand ladies’ records. Bennie Morrison has some astounding times to his record, and the smoothness of his style and the adept manner in which he executes bis new somersault turn are a revelation. Other prominent competitors include D. Ewart (South Auckland diving champion at present competing in the New Zealand title), “Billy” Whareiatu (1934-5 New Zealand Olympic representative), L. Yates (winner of the Kellerman Cup 1935), Rika Simon, and the speedy Ohinemutu “Flying Squadron.” Prominent swimmers are expected from Ponsonby and Otahuhu, also, who will swim against the best from the South Auckland Clubs. A public address system will be used by the club for the first-time at this carnival, and in addition to announcements, musical entertainment will be broadcast. Extra seating accommodation is being erected.
