IMPROVING ROAD
LEAMINGTON TO ROTO-O-RANGI
COUNTY COUNCIL’S PROPOSAL
At yesterday’s meeting of the Waipa County Council the engineer (Mr J. W. Civil) stated that he proposed to carry out improvements to the alignment of the Leamington-Roto-o-rangi Road, but in view of the possibility of the council deciding to bitumen-surface about li miles of the road in next year’s estimates he suggested that he be allowed to expend about £IOO additional on the present improvement work. The whole job would cost £ISOO or more.
He said he had conferred with Cr Fisher, who was agreeable to his riding bearing one-third of that cost and the riding would also carry its share of the remainder if that was provided from the county fund. Cr J. S. Fisher agreed that that was a clear statement of the position. He knew that the county fund is at present overdrawn, but thought the expenditure of the £IOO now would be good business. In the resultant discussion it was stated that some alteration in the basis of contribution for maintaining main roads had been foreshadowed by the Government, and it would perhaps be unwise to enter into a commitment of £ISOO for one particular road at present, even if the money was to come out of next year’s revenue. No decision was reached, it being understood that as soon as the Government’s intentions are made known the subject of surfacing the road for at least some distance from Leamington town boundary will be again considered.
