TOWN BOARD DISCUSSIONS
LOAN CONVERSION AND GORSE MENACE
Formal business in connection with the conversion of loans, a proposal for street improvements, and discussion on the gorse menace occupied the Leamington Town Board at the monthly meeting last evening. Members present were the chairman, Mr J, W. Garland, and Messrs A. E. Peppercorn, C. Kelly, H. G. Carter, F. W. Sheet, W. Horne, T. Hounslow and the secretary, Mr R. S. Hanna. On the motion of Mr Peppercorn the Resolution of the Conversion of Loans passed last month was confirmed. Arising out of the Loan Conversion scheme a motion was passed authorising the destruction of existing loan debentures.
It was decided that the loan of £2927 19/10 to be converted, should be reduced to £2925 for round-figure working, and the Public Trust will be paid the necessary fee. Other formal matters in connection with the conversion were dealt with. The matter of blackberry and gorse eradication on several properties received attention. Some effort will be made to arrange for the clearance of some areas where the growth on corners has become dangerous to traffic. It was reported that difficulty has been experienced in the past in having the growth cleared, but land-owners will be notified that the noxious growth must be cleared.
The drainage work scheme in front of Mr J. Blackman’s property, which had been delayed owing to the shortage of relief labour, received much attention. The meeting was agreed that a more satisfactory conclusion would be reached if the scheme was finished under contract. The Drain Committee will meet to consider the question. The question of a 121 per cent rebate on rates was discussed fully, and to finalise the matter of which ratepayers are entitled to the rebate a special meeting has been called. Complaints reached the board regarding unregistered cattle grazing on the roads. The inspector’s attention will be drawn to the breach.
Members expressed dissatisfaction at the street lighting in Leamington. Many of the lights have not been functioning for some time, and the Cambridge Electric Power Board will be notified of the fact.
The Hamilton Borough Council intimated that practically all the heavy traffic fees collected by the Leamington Town Board would be returned under the pool system. The members decided that the offer of Mr Reynolds to form an entrance to his property should be accepted. A complaint was received regarding the state of the Town Hall piano, and Mr Hounslow was empowered to consider the request for repairing the instrument. It was reported that the nameplates for the streets in the town area are being erected. Accounts totalling £6B were passed for payment.
