LICENSING COMMITTEE ELECTION
NOMINATION OF MEMBERS Nominations are at present being called for members of the Waikato Licensing Committee, and the Returning Officer, Mr F. T. Ray, of Cambridge, advises that should the number of nominations exceed the number of seats to be filled, an election will take place on March 10.
This will be the first election since 1929, for the 1932 election was cancelled by legislation. The Finance Act of 1931 provided that the election be held on the second Tuesday in the month of March following the national licensing poll. As there was no poll in 1931, the 1929 committee continued in office.
The present Waikato committee comprises Messrs C. M. Gummer and W. Morrice (Morrinsville), C. 11. Priestley and M. Wells (Cambridge) and A. H. Waring (Taupiri). The chairman of the committee is usually the magistrate for the district, at present Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., and the clerk is Mr E. W. Abercrombie, clerk of the court at Morrinsville. There are seven hotels in the Waikato licensing district —three at Cambridge, two at Morrinsville, and one each at Waihou and Taupiri. In 1929 the Waikato Licensing Committee was elected without a poll being necessary, the number of nominations not exceeding the number of seats to be filled. Should a poll be required all those on the Waikato electoral roll, as used at the recent general election, would be eligible to vote.
