BOARD MEMBERS’ INSPECTION. SATISFIED WITH PROGRESS. Yesterday members of tho Cambridge Domain Board made a thorough inspection of Te Koutu Park, and particularly the improvement works beingcarried out on the slopes to and the lake itself. For some considerable time eight unemployed workmen have been engaged, and tho board is well satisfied with the improvements effected. The lower levels of Te Koutu Park are no longer an eyesore. Some time ago the lower path was opened up entirely round the lake and this delightful walk is being carefully maintained. The same applies to the slopes to the lake and it is now possible to get views of the edges of the lake from the top paths. The cleaning out of noxious weeds on the slopes has also given many valuable young trees a chance to flourish. Under the enthusiastic guidance of Mr Jas. Hooker further general improvements have been carried out on the lower levels of tho park, not the least important being a new walk with entrance from the Lake Street side of the park. This is a marked improvement. Clearing the Rushes. A start has been made this week w.ith the clearing out of the rushes m the lake. The Board has had a substantial punt built locally and with grabs the weeds that have long detracted from the beauty of this area of wa'ter, are Being pulled out By the roots. Ir. no part.of the park is the clearing work so noticeable as in the area immediately Below the children’s playground and at the back of the Croquet, greens. Under the management of Mr Walter Moore, a native forest has been commenced and in the years to come it should Bo an added attraction. The permanent gardeners have the gardens in good order, and the rose and other areas appear to be coming on well for the summer season. There is a very nice bed of Iceland poppies already blooming profusely. Lake Outlet. A few davs ago a correspondent wrote suggesting that the waters of the lake could be readily cleared by improving the outlet to Carter’s Flat and the Karapiro Stream, but as was pointed out in a recent issue, the deepening of the outlet is not advisable owing to the steadily decreasing inflow to the lake. The weakening of the flow from the springs during the past decade has been pronounced, and more especially during tho past five years. It can only be hoped that the decrease will subsequently be arrested by a return to a wet cycle of weather.
As a result of the inspection yesterday the board members wore well satisfied with thQ progress made of late and it is the Board’s intention to carry on with further improvements to the lower regions as funds permit.
