BAND CONTEST

JUDGE’S COMMENTS.

TRIBUTE TO CAMBRIDGE BAND,

The following are abridged comments of the musical judge, Mr G. Buckley, on the Cambridge band’s performance in the C grade quickstep and selection at the recent contest at Hamilton:

C GRADE SELECTION. “Convivial Songs” (Dimmer)

This was a very good performance. The euphonium playing was nice, displaying good articulation. Intonation was not always perfect. At times the cornets were a little over-powering, and there was a general tendency to flatness in the playing. C GRADE QUICKSTEP.

“Home Again” (Vincent Turner). Tho opening was fairly good, but trumpeting bars were not quite neat enough. The drummer was very effective. On the march intonation was evidently suffering on the right wheel in the baritone euphonium section. There was a very good finish. Satisfactory Resulc.

The total receipts from gate and stand takings and sales of programmes at the contest amounted to £255 6/-. Adults and children, numbering 4704, raid for admission during the various sessions. Small returns have vet to come in and the contest committee is confident of defraying all expenses and making a small profit. Council’s Congratulations.

At the Borough Council meeting last evening Cr C. Boyce moved and it was heartily seconded by Cr C. W. Clark and carried that a letter of congratulations be sent to the band on its double win at tho recent contest. Cr Boyce said that as an old bandsman the success of tho band was particularly gratifying to him.

The Mayor endorsed the remarks of the mover and seconder and said the tireless work of the bandmaster, ’Mr J. Davis, must not be overlooked. The patience ho had displayed with the learner class had been commendable, and he was responsible for building up the band.
