The hopes Of South Africa snatching a victory in the second test faded away as the end of the day approached. The oncning batsmen, with an obvious policy of safety, offered a stubborn front, wiping off the arreas on the first innings with the loss of three wickets. The bowlers tried every device to snare the batsmen into a trap, but later realised their responsibility .and turned down opportunties to liven up play. There was a sensational episode when England was leading by 50 runs. Catterall secured three wickets rapidly at a low cost but Hendren hung on grandly and, with only half an hour left, a drawn match became inevitable. South Africa marred her chances of victory by dropping two catches, namely, off Wyatt when nine arid off Hendren when 11. T ';, i , . /
