MARSHAL JOFFRE DEAD
MAN WHO SAVED TRANCE. Australian Press Assn.—United Service PARIS, Saturday. The death has occurred of Marshal Joffrc at the ago of 79. Deep emotion was manifested at Rivesaltes, Marshal Joffrc's birthplace, where work is at a standstill. The weakening of his pulse at daybreak indicated that Marshal Joffrc '$ end was imminent. His wife, daughter, and son-in-law gathered at the bedside, and at 7.30 a.m. his chaplain administered final absolution. The dying man lay for four hours motionless and unconscious, and expired at 8.34 a.m. M. Barthou, Minister of War, who will* deliver the sole funeral oration on January 7, sent an Order of the Day to the Army announcing the death. He said: "Marshal Joffrc saved Franeo at the Marne.* He broke all the efforts of the enemy. His strength of soul, his indomitable energy, his continuous service ensured the final victory."
