BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
(To the Editor). Sir, —I believe in giving honour where it is due, and I am not like a lot of people in the borough who are always blaming the council, and never giving them credit. The council is out all the time to extend its usefulness. Last week, they sent our engineer to Napier to the Gas Conference, which was very good. It only meant a week's salary, and a few pounds for expenses, and he has returned, and his —or— knowledge is enlarged. Now I am pleased to see the council is sending our Mayor and Town Clerk to Invercargill to attend the Municipal Conference, and there will probably be something to do with gas there. It won't take more than 10 days at the outside, and the cost to the ratepayers only about £4O, certainly not as much as £6O. In view of the excellent results attained in the past from these conferences, in improving our condition, I am sure the money is well spent. A lot of people here growl about the footpaths, and would have work done on them, instead of spending money on conferences, but I would urge on them to take the long view, and realise what these conferences are going to do for our grandchildren. Permit me to congratulate the council as a whole, and to express the hope that the four councillors absent will be found to endorse the council's action. —I am, etc., "POT-HOLES."
