DIAMOND JUBILEE
SIXTY YEARS IN CAMBRIDGE.
MR J- A. FITZGERALD.
In a young country like New Zea- - land, it is seldom that we find celebrating their diamond jubilee, hence interest attaches to the fact that A a well-known and highly-esteemed resi- * dent of Cambridge, in the person of Mr J. A. Fitzgerald, .of Queen Street, to-day celebrates the sixtieth anniversary of his arrival in this district. Mr Fitzgerald was born in Auckland, and arrived in Cambridge on August 27, 1869, on his 14t.h birthday. Thus he is 74 years of age to-day. He came to his uncles, the late Messrs John and Robt. Fisher ,and worked with them for a time. Later he was with Mr Gane, and afterwards he took up his own farm and remained there for a great many years. Mr Fitzgerald’s parents, • both of whom have been dead for some time ; past, came to Pukerimu some five years after their son. Mr Fitzgerald has remained ip the district ever since. He ; has lived in retirement in Cambridge for some years. He recalls many inter-.. esting incidents -connected with early days of Cambridge, and states that it is difficult to recognise the Cam” . bridge of to-day witlfwhat it was sixty s years ago, when there were only‘about twenty homes in the settlement. v Mr Fitzgerald has received numerous congratulations on his birthday and! diamond jubilee of his arrival here, ' JjsfS
