The Prince of Wales has recovered sufficiently from his recent accident to resume hunting. The American athletes, Scholtz and Hahn, won the 220yds, 440yds and one mile at Dunedin on Saturday, The school-girl at Te Papapa, who, wandered away from her home on Wednesday afternoon, returned during the week-end. She had been living in a cave nearby. The third Sanders Cup race resulted in a win for Betty, the Canterbury representative, in 12h 55m 44s. Peggy was second in 12h 59m 34s. Avalon was third. The estates certified for stamp duty iu New Zealand last year aggregated £14,712,989. Of this sum, £5,887,477 was for amounts representing over £20,000. Rose, the N.Z. champion distance runner, broke the Australasian mile record at Masterton on Saturday, running the distance in 4m 18 15s, clipping a fifth of a second off the time put up by the American distance run-; ner, Power.
It was stated at the monthly meeting; of the Te Awamutu Power Board that the revenue for the mouth of December was £1927 11/8, composed of general lighting, £407; heating, £294; power, £1129; penalties, £20; meters, £40; streets, £36; against a total of £1535 for the same period the previous year. The manager reported that for the nine months of the current year’s working, the average increase of revenue had been £242 per month, a very satisfactory increase.
The Government has decided that the duty on imported wheat shall remain as at present. The TC Awamutu-Cambridge Terminating Building Society, group, 2, will hold a ballot on Thursday night next, at Te Awamutu, as advertised. The Reichstag has passed a law making duelling among Reiehswehr officers punishable by dismissal from service.--Sun Cablegram. At Palmerston North yesterday sev-enty-four motorists were each fined £5 and costs 28/, for exceeding the speed limit of fifteen miles an hour through the Manawatu Gorge.
The Cambridge Municipal Band played a number of selections at the Cambridge Domain on Sunday afternoon. It being a glorious day, there was a large attendance. We are pleased to be able to congratulate the band on the improvement in their performance on Sunday.
A house of six rooms in Norton road, Frankton, owned and occupied by Mr L. Tabor, was damaged by fire, which broke out about ten o'clock last Friday night. The Hamilton Fire Brigade was able to confine the flames to the rear portion of the building. The house and contents are insured in the Victoria Office for £900.
While competing in a wood-chopping contest at the Gordonton athletic sports gathering on Saturday, A. L. Smith, a farm worker, of Gordonton, severely cut his leg near the ankle with his axe. He was taken to Hamilton, where it was found necessary to insert several stitches in the wound.
The 62nd anniversary of the first entry of British troops into Te Awamutu fell on, Sunday. At daylight on February 21, 1864, about 2000 troops, commanded by General Cameron and led by Bishop Selwyn, marched into Te Awamutu. This action, according to Historians, practically completed the conquest of the Waikato, and the invaders were not opposed.
Speaking at the Presbyterian social last night, Professor Davies said there was a great shortage of ministers just now, and he earnestly hoped that, as a result of his visit to Cambridge, one or more young men would offer themserves for this, the greatest service they could possibly render. "It is a man’s job—one that calls for all the strength and powers that a man possesses," added the speaker.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., Hamilton, have received the following cablegram from their London house under date of 19th instant:—New Zealand Frozen MeatLamb: New seasons, 10 1/2d per lb. (average). Mutton: Wether and maiden ewe, light 6 1/2 d per lb, heavy 6d; ewe, light 4 1/2d per lb, heavy 4 1/4d per lb. The market is dull with downward tendency.
The following new company is reported by the Mercantile Gazette.:- —Glen Afton Collieries, Ltd., private company, Hamilton. Capital, £100,00, in 100,000 shares of £1 each. Subscribers: Hamilton, New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., 99,996, W. Goodfellow 1, and J. Clark 1. Tuakau, D. Fulton 1. Horsham Downs, D. Bruce 1. Objects: Coalmining, etc., and general incidental.
Messrs Gascoigne and Willis have accepted the tender of the local firm of Messrs Speight, Pearce, Nicoll and Days, Ltd., for the erection of two shops on the west side of Victoria Street, Cambridge. A considerable number of tenders were received, competition being keen and close. The new building; of concrete, will be of one storey, but of such a nature that auother storey can be added. It will be up-to-date, and of good appearance, and will be an acquisition to that part of the town.
In commenting on the beauty of Cambridge, during the course of the Presbyterian social last evening, Professor Davies, of Knox College, Dunedin. said that he had that day been asked whether he saw any resem-. blance between Cambridge, the great University city of England, and the Cambridge of New Zealand. (Laughter). He added that there was no com-, parison. The New Zealand Cambridge was very much more beautiful than the English city. The total absence of hills, especially to a Welshman, made the University city rather monotonous. Prof. Davies added that Cambridge of Waikato was one of the most beautiful towns he had seen for many a day, and said he would like to thank those who had had the foresight and good taste to plant the magnificent trees that were such a joy and great asset to Cambridge.
