CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

What has happened to the Chamber of Commerce'? is a remark that has been made of late. It would eertaiuly seem that there is a lack of interest, in this organisation, which should be the means of advancing the town's interests and bringing it more into prominence. There arc a hundred and one ways in which a live Chamber of Commerce, composed of progressive men with initiative, zeal and energy might be of great assistance to tho town and its residents, more particularly the business people, i Practically every town of iuiy importance possesses a Chamber of

Commerce, and we notice that these, bodies, in many cases, at least, are most active. It would certainly seem that Cambridge might take a lesson from her sister town (To Awamutu) in this rospect. The Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce has been most active in securing a daily mail service between that, town and Arapuni, in the building of railway houses in the neighbourhood of the Borough, and has kept the town prominently before tho public in other ways. At tho last moeting of. that body the secretary of the Chamber (Mr A. G. Warburtou) proposed the following resolution, which was carried unanimously: "That the Chamber oncourage the establishment of new industries in Te Awamutu (a) by negotiating with land owners; (b) obtaining information ro access, power and other services; and that by advertisement or other means tho Chamber attract new enterprises." The meeting asked a sub-committee to report on a concrete scheme in a few wooks. Wo quote the above to show that in other Boroughs that havo not the advantages possossed by Cambridge the Chamber of Commerce is playing an important part in the progross of tho towns. What is possible there should be practicable in Cambridge. Will not some of those people who express regret that Cambridge is so slow take an active interest in the Chamber of Commerce, and help to extend the scopo and energies of that body, and thus help the town and district to make further progress?
