The Waikato Independent Incorporating "The Cambridge Gazette." SATURDAY, MAY 24, 1924. WAIKATO WINTER SHOW.

What is generally recognised as the. greatest Winter Show of New Zealand —the Waikato Diamond Jubilee Winter Show —opens on Tuesday next, and will continue until June 3rd. Of late years this fixture has grown enormously, until it is now a truly great show. It has come to be something more than a district fixture; indocd it is more in the nature of a Dominion display, more particularly as regards dairy produce. Of late years the dairying industry has assumed enormous proportions. Hamilton is so situated that it is the natural centre of most productive dairying industry of the Dominion, consequently the big annual Winter Show has come to be recognised as THE Dairy Show of Now Zealand. The Waikato district is fortunate in having enthusiastic officers, who have "boosted" their Show with such success that it has attracted attention from all parts, and is now very largely patronised. There are abundant evidences that the monster Show to open on Tuesday next will be the "biggest and best yet." Entries are splendid in every section; the arrangements, as usual, thanks to the master hand of the enthusiastic and efficient secretary (Mr W. H. Paul) are admirable in every respect, and everything points to a record Show. It is pleasing to know, seeing that this is the premier dairy produce Show of the Dominion, that the entries of butter and cheese are far and away the biggest of any Show of the kind, not only in the Dominion, but also constitute a world's record, we understand. The keen competition at these Shows has created a spirit of keen rivalry among the dairy factories of the whole Dominion, and has, without doubt, accounted to a certain degree in bringing our produce to that high state of perfection that it enjoys. For this reason alone it deserves hearty support. The Show is also made the occasion of an animal meeting of the most, important organisations of the Dominion as regards the great dairying industry*. The various pedigree cattle clubs cause their annual conferences to synchronise with the Waikato Winter Show, and other important gatherings are also held at this time. Thus, in addition to its attraction through its actual exhibits, the Winter Show is the great meeting-place of the dairy farmers of the Dominion. We wish to emphasise the fact that this Show is ns much a Cambridge as a Hamilton fixture. It gives an opportunity for the farmers of every part of the great Waikato to forget the parochial spirit too often in evidence, and join heartily together for the common good. Cambridge district is splendidly represented among the exhibitors, and district residents will attend in hundreds. For the good name of the district, and of the whole province, wo sincerely hope that district residents will look upon this great gathering as their own Show, and accord it their heartiest support.
