RIFLE SHOOTING

frazlr smith belt

WON BY W. HARBUTT

The Cambridge Rifle Club were well represented at both the South Auckland Rifle Association's meeting at Waihi on Good Friday and Easter Saturday, and the Frazer Smith Belt competition at Frankton on Easter Monday. The shooting conditions at Waihi were generally bad, the cause being a strong fluctuating wind, and the scores clearly indicated this condition. Seven local men made the trip to Waihi and the majority were successful in securing prize-money.

On Monday nine local representatives journeyed to Frankton and were highly successful.

The Frazer Smith Belt match (7 shots at 300, 500 and GOO yards), which is open to riflemen from the whole of Group 4 Military District, was competed for by 40 riflemen, and was won by W. Harbutt, our local veteran, with the good score of 93. This. rifleman won this coveted trophy on a previous occasion, and on two other occasions tied for first place, losing in the shoot-off. On this occasion, Messrs Webber and Feisst, with 90 and 8S respectively, filled third and fourth places. In the other match of the" day a number of local men were also prominent in the prize list, while in the teams match (7 teams competing), Cambridge A (Harbutt, Webber, Feisst and Keeley) was successful in securing 17 points. CLUB TROPHY MATCH On Saturday next the local Club will hold a further trophy match over the 500 and 600 yards ranges, tbo handicaps for which will be declared on the range.

Concerning lectures in England given about New Zealand, Miss Myers says: “For lectures on New Zealand tho High Commissioner’s office is always ready to lend lantern slides; but although these are very .fine, they are out of date, and do not give a fair idea of what tlic country is like now. For example, those of Christchurch and Wellington show the public conveyances as chiefly hansom and horsedrawn, which is rather quaint. . However, I was told that something more up-to-date has now been procured.”
