The Rev. J. C. Davies, of Ekctahuna, has been appointed to the charge of the Levin parish, rendered vacant by tho resignation of the Rev. W. F. Grove,; who leaves shortly for .England. Mr Davies goes to Levin in September.

Mr W. B. Morris, chemist, Morrinsville, has disposed of his business to Mr S. H. Merriken, late of John Bell and Co., London. Mr Morris is leaving for the Bay of Islands shortly.

At a rneet ; ng in Auckland on Tuesday night, attended by some 400 women, Miss Melville (who unsuccessfully contested the Grey Lynn seat at last election), was selected as a nominee of tho Women's International and Political League for the Roskill electorate. Miss Melville will stand as an Independent, supporting the Reform party on a vote of no-confidence.

An old colonist, Mr Alexander Calder, who was one of the early settlers in the Waikato, died on Tuesday last at the Auckland Hospital. The deceased, who had reached the advanced "age of 85 years, was a native of Aberdeen. He went to Melbourne about 58 years ago, and 10 years later came to New Zealand. He engaged in farming in the Oamaru district for six years, and then removed to Auckland. He first settled at Paterangi 42 years ago, when the railway, was constructed only as far as Ohaupo. Subsequently he removed to Whatawhata, and later to Te Aroha. He left Te Aroha 14 years ago and resided in Auckland till his death. Mrs Calder predeceased her husband 14 years ago, yesterday being the anniversary of her death. The deceased-is survived by an adult family of four sons and three daughters.
