FIRE AT TE AROHA
SEVERAL SHOPS GUTTED FIEE BRIGADE'S HEEOIC WORK (By Telegraph—Press Association) TE AEOHA, July 21. A disastrous fire occurred at Tc Aroha at 3 o'clock this morning, Mclnman's tobacconist shop, Kuyvett's grocery store and auctio n mart, and the Public Trust Office were gutted. The fire is supposed to have been caused by rats. It had a strong hold when the brigade arrived. Six leads were used, and had the effect of saving the whole block. The damage is estimated at £3OOO. The insurances are divided between the Royal and Victoria Companies on Mclnman's stock about £7OO, on Knyvett's stock £4OO, and on the auction building (owned by Mr J. D. Morison) £ISOO. The occupants are heavy losers. The brigade, under Captain Pilkington, worked heroically under a great element of danger. Last week a fire started in the same building, but the brigade arrested the flames before much damage was done. Mclnman's was carrying a large stock of tobacco. A slight wind sprang up, and the picture theatre and adjoining buildings had a narrow escape.
