NEW BELT FASTENER
A MATANGI MAN'S INVENTION EXPERIMENTS AT HORAHOkA On Sunday morning last Mr Tom Shaw, of Matangi, accompanied by Mr Chas. Tisch, of the firm of Messrs Arthur Aitken and Co., vehicle builders, passed through Cambridge on their way to Horahora where tests are being carried out with a new design of belt fastener, which, if successful in the tests now being proceeded with, should prove a great boon to any factory or plant where belts are in use. A representative of this paper was shown one of these fasteners, which is of the simplest design, but unlike any present marketed fastener. It consists of a single piece of steel, made in sizes to suit any belts, with slots through which the belt is laced. When a strain is brought to bear on the belt it pulls tight on the fastener, holding the belt firmly. It is impossible for tho belt to pull out, and the join goes over a pulley noiselessly. There are no claws or nuts, etc., about the fastener whatever, and being so simple of structure, if thoroughly successful in the tests, it should be placed on the market at a minimum cost. At present several of these fasteners are in use in Hamilton and during the next few days it is expected that one will be in use in the printing works of this office. Mr Shaw intends exploiting his invention, and this paper wishes him every success.
