TREE MARKET URGED. A petition urging a free market for the meat export of the Dominion is being forwarded from Poverty Bay district to the Prime Minister, bearing the signatures of over 80 of the largest sheepowners, representing an ownership of about T,000,000 sheep and 100,000 head of cattle. The petition is in these terms: “We, the undersigned, sheepfarmers of the Poverty Bay district, are of the opinion that every encouragmcnt should be given to buyers of frozen meat to secure new markets for our produce, and with this object fn view, Armours should be allowed to operate in the Dominion, either to buy c.i.f., f.o.b, or on the hooks fot export. With the safeguards existing under the 1910 Slaughtering Act; we consider that the interests of the sheep farmers are fully protected by this legislation. Under no conditions w r ould we be favourable to any American firm becoming owners or shareholders in our freezing works. 5 ’
