FIRE ON STEAMER

AUCKLAND CONFLAGRATION.’ SMOKE INJURES FIVE MEN. (Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, this day. Early last evening, after work was stopped on a steamer discharging at the wharf, volumes of smoke issued from the hatch. The fire brigade pumped water through holes in the deck until midnight, when the fire had apparently abated, but the brigade continued operations. 1 Four firemen and a watersider who had entered the hold were overcome by smoke, and they were removed to the hospital.
