END OF THE STRIKE
RECENT AUSTRALIAN TROUBLE. MOST OF MEN RESUME WORK. (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, this day. On September Bth the settlement of the New South Wales railway and tramway strike, which lasted 38 days, was announced on terms upholding the authority of Government. With the settlement of the tramway and railway strike there, were a large number of those remaining idle who had struck in sympathy in New South Wales and other states. It has been reported by cable that the wharf labourers resumed work last week, and that negotiations . are proceeding with the coalminers, and that Ministers are hopeful of an early settlement. The strike has also affected the seamen, but no information has been received as to later developments on the water front. Several of the Sydney unions yielded on September 17th. Eight meetings of craft unions were held at the Trades Hall to consider the recommendations of the Strike Committee. Eight unions, represent an aggregate of 15,000 members, all agreed to follow the recommendations of the Strike Defence Committee. The boilermakers, moulders, carpenters, ironworkers, and amalgamated engineers at their meeting agreed to return to work only in private shops and Government dockyards, while the blacksmiths, shipwrights, '.j federated engineers, firemen, coachbuil ders, and wood and coal carters, resolved to resume in all shops.
