GERMANY’S VERDUN SCHEME.

LAST ATTACK CAUSES HEAVY LOSSES AND SMALL GAINS.

TRYING TO WEAKEN LINE BY CONTINUOUS .SHOCKS.

Received 10 p m

LONDON, April 18,

The Paris Press states that Germany's comparative inaction on the Verdun front is due to Die profitless attack on April 0. It resulted in heavy losses and insignificant gains. The Germans have adopted prudent methods, and are trying to advance by small stages and local actions.

Ihe Journal’’ says the Germans are endeavouring to weaken the Preach lines by continuous shocks and incessant movements at different points, probably preluding another general attack which is not any more likely to be more successful than the others because the Germans have already used their utm st available force.
