CAMBRIDGE WEST AFFAIRS.

. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —“Onlooker” desires to thank you exceedingly for publishing his letter on Saturday last, although it was rather clumsily worded, but the wise man says we must use the rod of correction to meet the spirit of rebellion, whether in asses or men—however ungentlemanly. Those creatures who have very crude and fossilised ways must be reformed to progressive ideas. “ Householder ” asks me about Mr R. Fisher’s answer re the upkeep of roads. That gentleman had no right to be present at the meeting, however much the opposition party might desire him to attend. They (the opposition) advertised an “ householders’ ” meeting, and Mr Fisher played the bias well. Every question asked on one side was readily answered to help the opposition cause, but on the other side he was a partisan. As to the upkeep of the roads, one road is from Shakespeare street to Grey’s corner and the other through Pukekura to the “ Crow’s Nest.” Had Mr Fisher acted differently, estimates of expenditure on the parts within the township would have been brought forward. lam informed that it was thought that Mr Fisher would bring forward the amount of expenditure on the whole length of those roads in order to defeat the town district proposal. At the meeting we knew we could carry on and manage a local government, though Mr Fisher said otherwise. For the benefit of the opposition party, I might say the question of appointing a clerk for the proposed Town Board has been duly considered, but I would warn the opposition not to make too much noise for we shall have a policeman then. —I am, etc., Onlooker.
