IN ANSWER TO HOUSEHOLDER NO. 2.
(TO THE EDITOR.)
Sir, —l may say Ido not feel much inclined to answer such a letter as “ Householder No 2,” has written, although he mentions my name rather freely. But perhaps it is my duty to try and put such a poor, helpless wanderer on the right path. Ido not know if “ Householder No. 2,” has the tendency of making black white and white black, as fie remarks but I am sure Mr Editor you will agree with me, when I say he has been writing at random. “ Householder No. 2,” is quite satisfied that Cambridge East and Cambridge West will be amalgamated, and under one body ‘in two years’ time, unless we form a town district. What a wonderful prophet this correspondent is. Does he know that if Cambridge West is formed into a small local ,body, and being so close in the vicinity of Cambridge East, it would then be more likely of getting into the borough of Cambridge East, than it is left in the Pukekura Road Board. “Householder No. 2,” quote figures which he says Mr Bailey tells us. I would ask “ Householder No. 2,” to wake up from his dream and put on his spectacles and again read the report of the meeting re the town district, and see if these figures were really quoted by me. My friend says the Government will pass legislation and hand the control of the reserves, and us as well, over to other people ; he certainly has no faith in his Government, and in regard to himself, poor creature, his mind must be wandering and his will diminishing to allow himself to be handled about in the way he assumes he will be. Yes, I did say that there were a number of roads kept in repair by the funds of the outside district of the Pukekura Road Board. I have ascertained that there are three roads which have been, and are being, kept in repair by the funds of the outside district of the Pukekura Road Board. In reference to the contribution, as a rate, towards the cost of the high level bridge, it does not matter what the calculations are based on. I know we pay l-6th of Id in the £ on the rateable, or capital, value of our property, and I think you will find that the capital value of the Cambridge West Township is now £30,100, and 1-,6th of Id on that amount is £2O 18s, and if we form Cambridge West into a town district, I am inclined to think that the Commissioners, when readjusting the matter, would make Cambridge West bear double the above amount—if not more. Hoping, Mr Editor, you can spare me space for this letter.—l am, etc., Guo. Bailey.
