ATHLETIC UNION. DISQUALIFICATION OP COMPETITORS. ? (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. Christchurch, This Day. The annual conference of the N.Z, . Athletic Union began last night. About 20 delegates were present. The chief point in the annual report is that com- s 1 petitors who took part in the Scottish ' Society’s New Year championship meet- ’ ing are disqualified. A highland dancer amongst the number applied to the Premier on the matter, but the executive of the Union declined to alter its decision in his favour, and therefore he canndt take part in the Union’s Exhibition meeting to-day. , TRAM FATALITY. Auckland, This Day. '•< John Graydon, an old man, was knocked down by the College Hill tramcar yesterday and sustained internal injuries. He died to-day. He had failed to hear the approaching car while crossing the street. ' THE ENGLISH CRICKET TEAM. Christchurch, This Day. The Canterbury Cricket Association has recommended the committee of the /' New Zealand Cricket Council, which is controlling the tour of the English cricketers, to play the first test match ■at Christchurch bn February 28th, March ' ■lst, 2nd and 3rd, starting each day at 2 p.m., so as to give shop assistants the opportunity to see the visitors playing. THE MAIN TRUNK LINE. Wellington, This Day. The Hon. Hall-Jones, who returned from a visit to the Main Trunk Line, " reiterates the statement he made in and out of Parliament, that Auckland and, Wellington will be connected by rail by the end of next year.
