His name, as well as those of the assistant Commissioners, is at present withheld. Brisbane, January 24.' Many persons whose residences at Oooktown were destroyed in the cyclone lost everything. Numbers of people were cut by flying iron. FEDERAL CABINET, Melbourne, January 23. Mr Ewing has been appointed Minister of Defence in the Federal Cabinet. Mr Keating becomes Minister of Home affairs. (Received January 24, 1.8 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 24. It is stated that Mr C. H. Dent, general manager of the Great Southern and Western Railway, is the new Chief Commissioner. EXHIBITION PROPOSAL. Sydney, January 24. The Herald throws cold water on the Sydney Exhibition proposal, while the Telegraph thinks it commendable and opportune. THE PLAGUE. Brisbane, January 24. A case of plague has occurred at Sandgate, and two cases in a new form at a suburb.
