CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A meeting of the Council ot the Chamber of Commerce was held at the Farmers’ Club last night. Present: Messrs F. J. Brooks (in the chair), R. T. Tudehope, M. E. Gardner, H. H. Clark, C. H. Treadgold, and I). Pirani. On the motion of Mr Gardner, seconded by Mr Clark, it was decided that the President interview the Mayor with a view to advertising Anniversary Day as a public holiday. It was decided that the quarterly meeting of the Chamber ot Commerce will be held on Monday, 12th February, at 7.30 p.m. The Council of the Chamber of Commerce has made the following suggestions to the Chamber of Commerce re holidays : 1. That the following public and special holidays be observed by the members of the Chamber of Commerce : 1906 January 29: Anniversary Day March 8: Waikato Central Show (close noon) April 13 : Good Friday April 16 : Easter Monday June 4 : Prince of Wales’ Birthday November : Waikato Show day November 9 : King’s Birthday December 25 : Christmas Day December 26 : Boxing Day 1907 January 1: New Year’s Day. 2. That March 17th and 24th May be not observed as public holidays. 3. That Labor Day be not observed unless its observance is made compulsory. 4. That in the week on which a public or special holiday falls, the statutory weekly half-holiday be not observed. 5. That when the following public holidays happen to fall on Saturday or Sunday, they shall be observed on the following Monday: Anniversary Day, Prince of Wales’ Birthday, and King’s Birthday. 6. That Wednesday be the weekly halfholiday. 7. We wish to introduce for discussion the advisability or otherwise of suggesting to Parliament a matter that has already been mentioned there : “ That all public holidays where practicable be observed on the nearest Monday.” 8. That all public holidays be notified in the local paper at least seven days previously.
