There was fine weather for Anniversary Day, which was marked by the usual regatta. PROSPECTS IMPROVING IN NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, January 26. Hon. Mr Oarmthers, Premier, speaking at Kiama, said the primary products of the State last year reached the immense sum of fortyfive millions. The revenue to Wednesday last exceeded the corresponding period of last year by half a million, and they might confidently unticipate a surplus on the financial year of half a million. AUSTRALIAN BUSH FIRES. SYMPATHY FROM MR SBDDON. (Received January 27, 10.26 a.m.) Melbourne, January 27. The Hons. Deakin and Bent have received messages of sympathy for the sufferers by the Gippsland fires from the Hon. Mr Seddon. The fires are now abating, though a fierce one is raging in the back country around Fosbi, which, if hot winds spring up, will devastate the hitherto untouched country. The fire has left for miles a blackened country, presenting a scene of desolation. AN ENQUIRY. Adelaide, January 27. An enquiry has been opened regarding the Zanita-Caimbatore collison. Two seamen gave it as their opinion that if the life boat had been launched two men seen on the Coimbatore’s boat could have been saved. They granted, however, that unless the captain of the Zanita was sure his vessel was safe it would not have been wise to send the life boat away.
