KAWHIA TRUNK RAILWAY.

SURVEY AND ESTIMATES. Particulars of the important Kawhia Main Trunk Railway proposal have been received by the Otorohanga Town Council. In reply to the request for details of the result of the recent trial surveys, Mr C. K. Wilson, member for Taumarunui, has obtained from the Public Works Department the following estimate:— No. 1— Kawhia to Frankton district, 35 miles 3C chains, estimated cost £469,040. No. 2—Kawhia to Kawa, 30 miles, ±'440,650. No. 3 —Kawhia to Kiokio, 30 miles 60 chains, £479,200. No. 4—Kawhia to Hangatiki, 36 miles 28 chains, £523,750. The engineer prefers No. 2 as being the shortest and least costly, though the grades are not particularly good. In No. 1 there would be two tunnels, and in No. 2 one tunnel, which would cost more than the two in No. 1. In No. 3 there was .me tunnel similar in cost to No. 2, and in No. 4 one tunnel which would cost £115,700.
