DISTRICT NEWS

WALTON. The holidays passed very quietly here, the only event of a festive nature taking place on New Year's Eve, when the Hall Committee held a dance, which was well attended and much enjoyed. MrG. W. Ross acted as M.C. One half of the time allowed the contractor (two months) has already, expired for the erection of the teacher's residence, and so far there is no timber in evidence.

One truck of the poles to be used n connection with the proposed rural telephone system has arrived—once more proving the truth of the old saying "Verily all things come to those who wait. Our local builder, Mr A. Adams, has just completed extensive alterations and additions to the local store for Mr A. J. Tong, making it one of the most convenient and up-to-date houses to be found in the townships of the Waikato. Rumour says we are to have the services of another blacksmith, three days weekly.

A project has been on foot for some time to entertain our member, Hon. W. H. Hemes, at a social gathering. A meeting convened by the secretary of the local branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held in the Public Hall on Saturday evenings to further the project. In the absence of the chairman, Mr W. Mapp, Mr J. J. Campbell was voted to the chair. A committee, consisting of Messrs Chapman, J. J. Campbell, Hon. W. W. McCardle and C. Trapski was appointed to carry out. the affair at a date to be fixed to suit all interested.

Hay crops are safely stacked, and oat harvesting is now in full swing, quite a number of binders being in evidence. The weather conditions are on the dry side for the young swede crops, large areas of which are now in. A few showers to put them beyond the ravages of the fly would be very welcome.
