CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
WON BY W. E. MASON. By Telegraph. Press Association. Auckland, Tuesday. The final round of the chess championship was played yesterday, and resulted in a win for Mason after an interesting tournament. The final scores are: Mason, 11; Davies, Barnes and Gyles, Hi; Kelling, 9J; Miles, 8*; Dodds, 8; Stewart, 7; Gricrson, 0 1 ; Severne, 0; Myers. 5; James and Wingfield, 4; Hicks, 3; Moore 2J. The prize list is as follows:—First and champion, W. E. Mason, Wellington, who receives a cheque for £3B and possession of the champion rook for a year; second, R. J. Barnes, Wellington, A. W. 0. Davies, Auckland, A. W. Gyles, Westport, who divide £2B 10s amongst them; third, F. K. Kelling, Wellington; fourth, E. J. Miles, Auckland; fifth, (i. F. Dodds, Nelson. Mr Mason is champion for the fifth time. The championship has gone to Wellington Hi times, to Dunedin four times, to Christehureh three times, to Auckland twice, to Rangitikei once, and to Australia once.
