Donkey Work
DONE BY AUSTRALIANS. SELF-MADE SLAVES. Sydney, January 12. Sir William Lever, head of the great soap firm, was entertained by his employees. In a speech referring to the White Australian policy, he said: "Australia breeds the finest men of any section of the AngloSaxon world, and here by your policy you are condemning them to do 'donkey work.' Why should not the White Australian be a superior man directing the inferior man in making the best use of God's earth'.' God has given some a higher intelligence than others. Do .not go on compelling the white man to do donkey work, when you can get black labour to help you to make the most of your natural advantages, thus giving your own flesh and blood a chance of thoroughly developing and enjoying your inheritance." He said he touched on the matter with some delicacy, and daresay that there was another side to the question.
