SERIOUS ACCIDENT

A MARVELLOUS ESCAPE By Telegraph.—Press Association. Ashburton, Monday. A serious accident occurred on the Mt. Somers road, yesterday afternoon. Mrs Nevin, with her one year old baby and three other children, Mrs Bowden, senior, aeed 80 years, and Messrs Bowden and Nevin, were driving in a heavy spirng cart. Nevin alighted at the foot of the hill to lighten the load, but some distance up the incline, the horse began to run backwards. Bowden jumped out and tried to stop it, but the cart went over the side of the bank, and dropped 30ft on to the shingle below, turning over three times. It rested on the two women One child was among the horses feet, the others were thrown clear. With some difficulty the car was lifted off the women who were unconscious. Mrs Nevin had her collarbone broken, while Mrs Bowden and one child were much bruised.
