LEAMINGTON TOWN BOARD

A meeting of the Leamington Town Board was held last evening, in the Town Hall. There were present: Messrs G. Jarrett (chairman), J. Keeley, W. J. White', W. F. Morse, W. Lovett, J. T. Harrett and C. Lockett —the full hoard. The chairman reported he and the clerk had arranged with Mr Eastwood to gravel Tennyson, Noel and Burns streets, at Is fid per yard, as directed at the previous meeting. The. Waipa County Council wrote offering to keep open the offer of the four acres of gravel reserve at £6O per acre, for a term of three months. Tenders for the caretaking of the Town Hall had been received at the previous meeting, namely: T. L. Keeley, Taper weak; B. Marsh, £ls per annum if the hail was used once a week, and £2O if used more than once in each week. After some discussion a motion was moved, also a couple of amendments; but as neither of them were seconded the matter was left over until next meeting.

Mr Eastwood’s tender for work in Cook street, nearly opposite the high level bridge, being considered too high, Mr ,T. Jarrett, junr.’s offer to do work for £5 5s was accepted. His offer to provide man, horse and dray at 14s per day, or with two horses at 17s was also accepted; he also was willing to provide another horse at 6s per day.—lt was found that Mr Eastwood’s method of taking two yards of gravel in his drays did not suit patching the loads, and it was decided that the surfaceman and Mr Jarrett could do it cheaper. Mr Eastwood will take a small lump off Tennyson street, opposite Mr Attwood’s, and gravel same; form about 12 chains of Spencer street and gravel eight chains of Scott street, from Raleigh to Camphell streets. The chairman and Mr Keeley were deputed to make the necessary arrangements with Mr Eastwood.

A quantity of other work was mapped out for the surfaceman and J. Jarrett, junr., to do. A very lengthy and desultory discussion took place over the estimates for the proposed loan of £2OOO for road workers, etc. which will be submitted to a meeting of the ratepayers to bo "held in the Town Hall on Monday next. It embraces the making of a new road from opposite the southern end of the high level bridge to the junction of Burns and Wordsworth streets, which means the purchase of land. It being thought this scheme might endanger the loan for road works being carrie, 3 out, it was decided to take the votes on separate issues, viz., for road works, for purchasing land, which embraces the purchasing of four acres from the Waipa County for gravel reserve, and for a drainage scheme. The board then sat as the Leamington Domain Board; but there was practically no business only reports as to work that had been done.
