The High Commissioner’s cable, dated London, March 23, is as folIcws (quotations unless otherwise specified are average market prices on spot). There is no change in the strike situation:— Mutton: There is better demand, epsecially for light weights, which are scarce. Canterbury, in small supply, nominally 4|d; North Island, sad. Lamb: The market is firm. The supply of Canterbury falls short of the demand. Nominally, Canterbury is quoted at sgd, other than Canterbmy, 51d. Beef: The market is firm. The stocK of New Zealand beef an hand is light, and supplies of American chilled beef are small. New Zealand hinds, 4d; fores, 3Jd. Butter: The market is quiet, but holders are firm. Stocks are moderi ate. The average price for the week jof choicest New Zealand butter is ! 127 a; Australian, 1235; 'Argentine, I 1225; Daniih 1365; Siberian, 1265. Cheese: The market is quiet, but firm, with small supply. The,average price for the week of finest New Zealand cheese is 74s 6d; English Cheddar, 925. Hemp: The market is quiet and only small business doing. On spot, New Zealand, good fair grade, £2l 10s, fair grade £2O; fair current Manila, £2l 10s; forward shipment of New Zealand, good fair grade, £2l 15s, New Zealand fair grade £2O ss; fair current Manila, £2l 15s. The output from Manila for the week was 28,000 bales. Kauri Gum: The market is very quiet and no business doing. Nominally, there is no change in prices, viz. :--Daik brown, selected, rescraped, £6 to £7 10s per cwt.; dark brown, £3 4s; scraped, £4 5s to £4 15s; dark brwon chips, drossy, 30s to 355; rescraped pale amber, £lO to £l2; three-quarter pale, scraped, £7 to £8; diggers’ chips, good, 455. The stock totals 132 cases. Wool: The market is firm, with an improved demand. Current quotations (for Bradford tops are;—36’s, low crossbreds, Is Id; 40’s, low crossbreds, Is 1J; 44’s, medium crossbreds, Is IJd; 50’s, half-breds, Is sd; 56’s, quarterbreds, Is 7Jd; 60’ 3, merinos, 2s Oid. London, March Z5. Sheep: North Island. 3§d, beat brands 4d; New Zealand ewes, 3 l-16d. Lamb: North Island, 5Jd; selected brands, 5 5-16 d. Beef: Fores 3Jd, hinds 4d. Australian; Sheep, light none offering; heavy, 3Jd; ewes, 3d; lambs, best brands, 4Jd, fair quality 4Jd. Beef: Fores 3d hinds 3 9-16 d. South American: Sheep: Light, none offering. Heavy, 3|d.
