RAGLAN
Except for the strong' easterly winds that have prevailed the weather has been perfect during the past week, and oven the winds have not come amiss to many of our settlers, as they have assisted in the drying up process, and have also favoured the flames that during the last few days have been started in nearly all the locally felled bush and scrub. This opportunity that has been afforded for burning off will probably steady, if it does not enhance the price of grass seed, which has shown a downward tendency since the opening of the season. At the Magistrate’s Court, Raglan, before Mr F. O'B. Loughnan, S.M., Waller Lane was charged with being drunk while in charge of the mail 1 coach and horses at Raglan on Chiistmas Day, and was fined £3 with coats Us. In connection with this case George Toyne Harris, licensee of the Royal Hotel at Raglan, was 1 then charged with selling whisky to Lane on Christmas Day, during such time as his licensed premises should have been closed. The prosecution proved that Lane had not slept on the premises during the night of Christmas Eve. After hearing the evidence in defence the Magistrate, however, ruled that as Lane had a permanent room engaged at the hotel, which he occupied on alternate nights, the fact of his accepting the hospitality of a friend on the night in question did not affect his status as a boarder. The case was accordingly dismissed. In future the launch which conveys the Waingaro mail and passengers will leave the Raglan wharf at 6.45 a m. instead of 7 a.raDuring show week Mr and Mrs ( Darrow.on the occasion of their severance from the Harbour View Hotel, and as a mark of the high appreciation of the manner in which they have conducted it, were presented ■ with a handsome set of four silverplated entree dishes. Mr A. R. Langley made the presentation, and r Mr R. F. Bollard, M.P., Mr Campbell 1 Johnstone, chairman of the Raglan County Council, and Mr Sydney Pel- ! ham, chairman of the Raglan Town Board, made brief speeches, referring in eulogistic tenns to the perfect way the house bad been carried on under the management of Host and Hostess Darrovv. Mr Harrow, who i was visibly moved by the high appre- , ciation shown to himself and Mrs 1 Harrow, suitably replied.
