Wellington, Last Night. j 1 The steamer Anglo-Saxon, which ' | put back account of an explosion j which resulted in the death of the chief engineer, resumed her voyage to London at 5.30 this morning, repairs having been effected to the damaged machinery. It is understood that the Government does not intend to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr Heywood, Assistant Auditor General. The position, when filled, is permanent, and t h e officer can only be removed by a resolution of both Houses. Whitehouse. who was injured when Arcadia fell in the Hack 1 Hurdles race at the Rangitikei races 1 yesterday, died at the hospital at 1 5.30 o’clock this morning without regaining consciousness. Death was due to a fractured skull and hemor--1 rhage of the brain. Christchurch, Last Night. ' The New Zealand Flourmillers’, Association go into voluntary liquidation, and notice has been given for a meeting to be held on the 12th inst. The association is alleged to have ! been working unharmoniously, and a number of mills have been operating ' outside the association. Ashburton, This Day. , As a result of an appeal made by , the Rev. Dr. Gibb at the N.Z. Presi byterian Bible Class Union’s summer I conference last night, it is probable , that two young men members will go to the Otago University with a view to entering the regular ministry of . the Presyterian Church, while two, and probably three, decided to devote themselves to some mission work of , the church. i On Monday morning a young man i named James Johnstone, 18 years of ■ age, son of Mr Christopher John- ; stone, and in the employ of Mr D. G. Wright, of Surrey Hills, went out shepherding, and as be had not returned in the evening, a search party was sent out. and found his horse without its rider about four miles from the homestead. Johnstone was subsequently found dead near the r horse on a small hill. No cause can i be assigned for the fatality, unless ■ the horse stumbled and threw de- » ceased, who was a steady man, and ! conversant with the country. There i is no suspicion of foul play. The New Zealand Presbyterian , Bible-class Union’s annual summer conference has closed, after a most . successful series of gatherings, spread over seven days. On New Year’s ■ Day a sports meeting was held in the > Domain, and yesterday a farewell garden party was given.
