The Land Bill.
INTENTION OF THE OPPOSITION (By Telegraph—Press Association) Dunedin, Last night. Speaking on the attitude [of the Opposition with regard to the land question, Mr James Allen, M.H.R. for Bruce, said they will not haul down their colours as the Minister for Lands has done. They will do their best to secure the option of the freehold of the land for settlement and lease in perpetuity holders, as it has practically been conceded now to the Crown land lease in perpetuity holders. He could not see the fair ness of the allocation of the endowment lands, especially when it is remembered that these lands are under the Government proposal to be released only. The Allocation proposed by the Minister allots 1,215,000 acres to the North Island and 7,785,000 to the South Island, so that practically all the North Island lands will be open on the optional system except one million acres, whereas in the South Island it is proposed to leasehold close on eight million acres.
