(BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) FIRE ON THE STEAMER MAPOURIKA. Wellington, Last Night. About 11 o’clock last night a fire occurred in the cabin occupied by the third engineer ot the Union Company’s steamer Mapouriba, lying at the Queen’s Wharf, but the flames wore extinguished before extensive damage had been done. The outbreak is believed to have been caused by the bursting of a kerosene lamp during the temporary absence of the third engineer from the cabin.

DYNAMITE ACCIDENT. Waihi Last Night. A young man, named Charles Ashby, aged 31, a miner residing at Karangahake, met with a shocking accident yesterday at Karangahake by the explosion of a dynamite cap in his mouth. Ashby who was working on the night shift, retired to bed at 10 a.m. Between 3 and 4 p.m, he was found emerging from an outhouse in a shocking state, his mouth being shattered from the explosion. A dynamite cap and some fuse were picked up near the scene. Assistance was immediately summoned, and Dr. Smith attended to Ashby’s injuries. The sufferer was then taken to the hospital, where Dr. Claridge found that the root of his mouth was shattered, the jawbone dislocated and the teeth blown away. Ashby is in a bad state. No cause can be assigned why the act should be deliberate, and the unfortunate man is unable to give any account of the affair. It is understood Ashby’s parents reside at Te Kopuru.

ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES, Oamaru, Last Night.

A young man, named James Sinclair, met a painfully sudden death by a fall from a horse in Thames-strect. Last night he was riding along, when the animal shied at some white stone by the roadside. The rider held up his horse, striking it with a strap, when the horse threw him on his head. He died this morning. He was a native of this district, single, aged 31. At the inquest the verdict was accidental death. ITALIAN WARSHIP AT WELLINGTON. Wellington, Last Night. The Italian third-class cruiser Calabria arrived from Suva this morning. Commander Waeaco is in charge, and H.R.H. Prince of Undine is on board. The Calabria is on a cruise round the world. She remains here for five days and then goes on to Australia.
