V.E.C. MEETING. BLUE SPEC WINS THE CUP. (Received November 7, 5.19 p.m) Melbourne, November 7 The weather for the Cup was typical, hot and sunny. There was a tremendous attendance, and the course was in magnificent condition. It is estimated that 100,000 people were present. A singular incident occurred in the Cup Hurdle Race. Allan, the rider of the winner (Florin) broke his stirrupleather, and, riding a desperate finish, won with the stirrup - iron in his mouth. The rider of Blue Spec is a son of of Constable Bullock, the champion roughrider of Victoria, and he has just arrived from England. He rides with the “Sloan ” crouch seat. The following are the results: — Cup Hurdle Rack— Florin 1, Adjuster 2, Neglect 3. Railway Handicap —Billingsgate 1, Mairp 2, Decolette 3. Time, 1 min. 15 secs. Melbourne Cup. Blue Spec I Scot Free 3 Tartan 3 Blue Spec can be described as a welltested performer. As a three-year-old ho showed his ability to stay, when he came home in third place behind Position and Circe for the Sydney Tattersail’s Cup of 1903 ; but it ivas not until last season, at which time he had attained the age of five years, that he gave his owner a big winning turn, the Perth Cup and Kalgoorlie Cup (which events ho won under Bst2lb and Ost 21b respectively) being the races to fall to him. Though the V.K.C. handicappor evidently considered Blue Spec’s winning "performances in West Australia to be of a meritorious character, as he awarded himSstin the Melbourne Cup, there were those who considered him an overrated horse, and proof of this is to be found in the fact that in a small race (the Moonoe Valley Cup), run in Victoria on the 2Sth ult., he was let off with 7st 91b. Blue Spec won that race in good style, and he was mentioned as having a good outside chance for tho Melbourne Cup. Betting on the cup was : 3 to 1 against Tartan, U to 1 Maniapoto, 7 to 1 Warroo and Scut Free, 12 to 1 Blue Spec and Fabric, 1G to 1 Marvel Loch, Gladsome, Emir and Canteen, 20 to 50 to 1 the others.
