MAUNGATAUTARI.
In the schoolroom on Friday evening the Messrs Death Bros, gave a social to a considerable number of friends. To a certain extent rain marred the arrangements made, but the room was well filled, and it was agreed on all sides that nothing to equal it has been held here for a long time. The exuberance of youthful spirits made the proceedings almost boisterous at times. Plenty of excellent refreshments were at hand, Mr E. A. Death acted as AI.C. Among those present were many from Cambridge, Pukekura, Taotaoroa and Auckland, and also Mr aud Airs R. Platt from the Waitarapa. .Several songs and recitations were given by Airs Cooper, Air E. Martyn, Air E. Nickle, and Mr Edgerley. Some of these were extremely humorous and added much mirth to the proceedings. There is scarcely a fairly good turnip crop in the district this year, and some are almost total failures. However, the winter, so far, has been quite mild, and tho stock are still fairly well off. So far, no move has been made iu the way of carting tho timber in for the schoolhouse. AYhcu it is carted now tho roads will be rendered almost impassable. The worst of it is that those who caused tho delay in tho work have no need to travel over our roads. The cold wind of the last few days shows a careful farmer the need of shelter for cattle. There is scarcely a more exposed place than this to be found in the province; yet there is hardly a sign of a live fence being planted. There is not much shelter in a wire fence.—-(Own Correspondent).
