When three miles from Katikati, on the Waihi side, the coach ran into a deep mud rut. and was embedded to the axle. The swingletrees were broken and the coaeli fell over on its side, precipitating fill its passengers into the mud. One of the passengers received injuries to his face, caused by a dead pig falling upon him. Now gear was procured from Katikati and the journey was continued, Waihi being reached without further mishap.

TUB POLICE SCANDAL. Wellington, Last Night

The Dunedin police scandal will, it is understood, be exhaustively reviewed by the Commissioner of Police in bis annual report for Parliament. Mr Dinnie said recently that, though there were always plenty of applicants offering for admission to the force, tho difficulty was to select candidates of good education and intelligence, Mr Dinnie emphasised the fact that the tests to which candidates were subjected were stricter than in any other part of the world, and every possible precaution was adopted with a view of selecting men whose chaxactor would bear the closest scrutiny. Two more constables have resigned from the Dunedin police force. THE FACTORY ACT. Gisborne, Last Night, lu the Magistrate’s Court to-day two brothers named Robb, who keep a wood and timber yard, were charged with failing to register their premises as a factory. Tho defence was that they employed no labour, only the two defendants being engaged on tho premises, and that they therefore did not come within the intention of the Act, which was for tho benefit of employees, Tho magistrate held that defendants came within section 10, and inflicted a fine of 10s and costs. A SERIOUS CHARGE. Christchurch, This Day. A man between 55 and CO years of age has boon arrested on a charge of having indecently assaulted a girl ten years old. The girl is in a serious condition, and her depositions have been taken.
