♦ • (BY TELEOBAPH—PEK.SS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, Last Night. At the S.H. Couit today Eruest Simpson broughb a claim for £SO against T. «. McCarthy (brewer) O. McArdle, W. Corby and F. Smith. Plaintiff alleged that he had been employed by the defendants to do certain work in connection with an inquiry into the validity of the Newtown local option poll, und in addition to a weekly sum he was to be paid a bonus of £3O if the poll was declared void. The defence was a repudiation of any such agreement. At the suggestion of the S.M. the case was adjourned to permit an arrangement being come to between the parties. Wellington, This Day. J. H. Pope, Inspector of Native Schools, letires at the end of the year, owing to having reached the retiring age. Napier, This Day. In the libel action Eagleton v. The Daily Telegraph newspaper, a verdict for defendant was given on all issues with costs. Doxedin, Last Night. Ac the meeting ot the City Council a salary of £4OO was voted to the Mayor. Some discussion took place on the case of Mr H. J. Walter, a former Mayor. When, on his acton, the late Mr H. S. Fish was ousted from the Mayoral chair as being interested in a sun-contract, the Council refused to vote Mr Walter the usual salary. Aa Mr Walter is now in indifferent health and circumstances, he asked for consideration of his claim to the remuneration he was then deprived of. The Finance Committee had no recommendation to make, but the matter was referred back to the Committee for' further consideration as to the legal position. Waimate, Last Night. The Arbitration Court has been sitting here yesterday aod to day, hearing evidence in the dispute between the threshing-machine owners and workers' union. Mr Justice Cooper intimated ,that he would make the award known in a day or two. CiiRisTCHtJECK, Last Night. The Arbitration Court will sit in Christchurch on Wednesday to take the case of the Canterbury Flourmillers' Employees' Union v. the employers. The Tramwy Board has decided to take a poll on the proposal to borrow a quarter of a million for altering and extending the trim system. Chbistcuubch, This Day. The Boating Association has decided to stand a team to compete acainst New South Wales, Victoria aud Queensland in September. Greymooth, Last Night. The manager for the Kotuku oil syndicate reports that he has goue down 50 feet, and there are already indications of oil. Already ten gallons had collected iu the drums.
