Six Canterbi ry members ot the House of Representatives—namely, Messrs Taylor, Davy, Lmrenson, Tanner, Buddo unci Witty—have left on a visit of inspection of tho Otago Ceutral line. At the adjourned inquest on E. Y. Simpson, Professor Bickerton, who marie an analyst, deposed to finding a considerable quantity of ar«cnic in deceised's stomach. A verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned. A meeting of the creditors of De Silva, a travelling jeweller, was to have been held on Monday but there was no quorum present. The bankrupt stated thut he had been robbed of his stock of diamonds jewellery (valued at £1072 wholesale) on board the steamer Waikare, but the police were unable to trace the thief. He had filed at the request of his creditors, who had paid the fees. An offer of 2s b'd in the £ was made by the bankrupt's brother. At the Supreme Court yeßterday, Frank Giles Hemplemen, bookkeeper at Kaiapoi brewery, was convicted on three charges of embezzlement, totalling about £2OO, extending from ihe year 1900. Mr Russell, who defended accused, asked for probatiou, Hia Honor said it would be a serious misfortune if it were to be understood that a man in a position of trust could go oo using his employer's money trusting that he would be able to replace it, or that the only penalty would be probation. It would be a dangerous abuse of an Act designed to be employed in other circumstances. Accused was sentenced to 12. months on each charge, sentenced to be concurrent. Napier, Last Night. A sharp shock of earthquake was experienced here at 3.15 p.m. yesterday.
